About 120 years ago, at the end of the 19th Century, the first member of the Deutsch family began to trade with antiques. Dealing with antiques was at the beginning grown out of an accidental transaction to offset pecuniary embarrassment, but soon became the chief occupation of the family, and till today each generation of the family is involved with enthusiasm, interest and fascination in this field. It's not only a subsistence of life, it's also the life occupation of the family.

After the First World War two stores could be opened in the inner historical city of Vienna, but they got lost at the beginning of the Second World War. After the great losses of the war, the first stores could be opened again in London in 1949 by Hugo Deutsch and in Vienna in 1954 by Friedrich Deutsch. Both branches still exist today.

This is a guide line for a better understanding of the descriptions.
1.)
Only if the name of an artist is written in full with his life dates and place of birth and death the object is in our mind an original by that artist. Whether the object is signed or not.
2.)
"Attributed to … " means that in our mind it is a work by the hand of the described artist, although there is a degree of uncertainty as to the authorship.
3.)
"Studio or workshop …" means that the object was created with influence from the artist or from his absolutely near environment, maybe with parts from the artist himself.
4.)
"Circle of …" means in our mind a work by an closely influenced artist from the same period and same style.
5.)
"School of …" means that in our mind the object was executed at the written time and location or from an artist in his influence but from the following generation.
6.)
"Manner of …" means that the object is in style near to the named artist but is possibly from a later date.
7.)
"Follower of …" is a work in the style of the described artist but from a later date.
8.)
"After …" is in our mind a later copy of the work of that artist.
9.)
"Bears signature …" means that the signature is by another hand (faked).
The description doesn’t include automatically the condition of an object. All items are generally in used and aged condition or can be partly damaged. If you want a clear statement about the condition, you have to request this and we will try to answer this as good as possible with a condition report.
If you bought an item personally in the room, you have to leave your cash deposit as a cash downpayment and you have to clear the total invoice in between a week.
If you bought an item by phone, internet or written bid you get the invoice by email after the sale and you have two weeks to clear it with bank transfer (recommended) or credit card (only VISA or MASTERCARD). Cheques will also be accepted but will need clearance from our bank before an item can be released. All costs of cheque clearances from your and our bank have to be paid by your side.
Cash payments will be as well accepted. For higher amounts with ID only.
If in the description there is no sign or asterisk visible, there is no tax to pay on the total amount. To the hammer price will be added our commission of 24% that includes 20% state tax which is a service tax and not refundable or possible to export.
Marked items fall under the regularly tax, which means 10% or 20% will be count on the total (hammer price + commission excl. tax [20%]).
We are not professional shippers but can send you a list of recommended and safe shipping companies and parcel services for national and world wide operations.
We do send small and not fragile items under 1m in size on your risk and can give you an affordable shipping quote only after the sale. In this case, you have to insure the items by yourself if you desire.
There will be no storage charges and we will be very happy because we are limited in space if you collect you item in between a month. We can assist you in shipping (see FAQ 10). After this month, you have to face storage and possible delivery costs to a warehouse. The storage costs can be from EUR 1,- to EUR 10,- per day. If you cannot manage to collect the item in between a month, kindly arrange a period free of charge in advance of bidding.
